The Die Goldene Europa Award was presented between 1968 and 2003. It was Germany's oldest TV award at that time. The annual award ceremony was recorded before an audience in Saarbrücken and broadcast a few weeks afterwards. The evening was hosted by Manfred Sexauer.

Murray Head was briefly interviewed followed by Benny, Björn and Tim Rice. When asked how their collaboration had started, Björn answered, "Tim was unemployed and so he contacted us. Our collaboration was brilliant since our personalities are similar - lazy people with lofty ambitions!" 

At one point, the host addressed Benny as Björn to which Benny responded by pointing to Björn and saying, "That's Björn!".

Die Goldene Europa Award (Golden Europe Award), for Chess, was presented to them by Murray Head who then performed Pity The Child.
