Additional information

Profiles in Rock was an excellent, but short-lived weekly 1-hour radio "rockumentary" with Terry McGovern's narration run in 1980 in USA. It was also a TV series, made by an independent production company called ON-LINE (no longer in operation) between 1980-1989.

Directors: Martin Melhuish and Doug Pringle
Producer: Peter Alves
Executive producers: Harvey Finkelstein and Steve Grossman

Episodes were, amongst others, on The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith (1980), The Police (?), ELO (1980), Kate Bush, The Moody Blues, Roger Hodgson (Supertramp), Earth Wind and Fire, Roger Daltrey (The Who) (1981), Bev Bevan (ELO), Supertramp, ABBA, Van Halen, Billy Squier, Asia (1982), Heart (?), Iron Maiden (?), The Cars (?) Ozzy Osbourne (?), Loverboy (?) and Jonathan Cain (Journey) (1983).

The series was also known in different territories as Profiles in Rock, Backstage Pass and Freeze Frame, and was broadcast, amongsy others, on Citytv and CBC (?) (Canada), ITV (UK) and MTV (USA).

The ABBA episode went under maintitle Freeze Frame and was filmed in August 1982 although the end credits show the date as ©1983 - probably because its first airing wasn't until early 1983.

US DJ Bob Hamilton flew to Stockholm to interview (rather aggressively):

  1. Benny (at Polar Music Studios)
    Super Trouper PROMO
  2. Stig Anderson (presumably at Polar's offices, Hamngatan 11),
  3. Frida (at restaurant at north end of Kungsträdgarden (currently a TGI Fridays) - not at Cafe Opera which is an ABBA urban myth!) and
When All Is Said and Done PROMO
    BREAK
  4. Agnetha (on the Skeppsholmen bridge and Bar Chapman)
  5. Phil Collins also said a few words about producing Frida's album.
I Know There's Something Going On PROMO
The Day Before You Came PROMO

Unusually, Björn was not interviewed for this programme.

Hamilton was a pushy interviewer!  When he abruptly asked Benny what he thought of Stig, Benny hesitated. The look on his face read, "What kind of question is that?"   Stig was as confident about his accomplishments as ever, and it took Frida to bring Hamilton under control.  Despite Hamilton's rudeness, these are real questions. ABBA could not grasp breaking up in the American or British sense.

  1. Benny's face when asked what he thinks of Stig Anderson.
  2. When Agnetha is asked, "How long do you think ABBA’s going to be together?” she answers, “Oh, that’s always hard to answer too because I don’t know. I think as long as the boys could write, we could go on forever!”
